I have a pair of 891Vs -- the same as 891As, I understand, except for a vinyl finish instead of a wood finish. I've owned and played them continuously since buying them in the early '70s. I had the woofers reconed maybe 15 years ago and they were as good as new -- the best damned speakers I've ever owned, bar none. My son recently blew the tweeters to smithereenies by listening with headphones at high volume without turning the speakers off first. The woofers and crossovers appear to be okay. Anyone know how or where I can get replacement tweeters? There's a code stamped or printed in ink on the tweeters but I can't read it, so I don't even know what the part number might be. Any help would be greatly appreciated because in the interim I'm reduced to listening to my Bose Acoustimass III speakers -- which can't hold a candle to my Altec Lansings. Thanks!

I'll make no commitments about the seller or the condition, but I believe these (click on link) are what you're looking for.

The tweeter in those bookshelf are radiating tweeeters. If they were stock components then they could be repaired. The best alternative is to purchase 2 Fostex Tweeters with similar size at 8 ohms impedance. Fostex would be the closest sounding to Altec.

The Fostex are fine but:
The 891 has a crossover point of 1600- none of those Fostex will do that. The efficiency might be an issue too.
The ones bfish posted a link to may work. The Santana II had a 2500 hz xover but they would be more likely to work I think than the Fostex.
As far as sounding like Altec, those tweets were CTS I believe. The 891 is a good small speaker, but it wasn't meant to be like the pro stuff- it would be called "entry level" these days.

The Santana tweets I linked to are the same part number as for the 891V.

Convergence please read the spec sheet before you argue- you have a bad habit of going off half cocked.
If you had you would have seen for that tweeter:
Recommended Cross-over Frequency
: more than 2kHz
It may wotk at 1600 with a derated power, but with it's low efficiency it is a very bad choice.
Yes at 2Khz it will have some response to 1 kHz. But that means less than nothing in this app.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Oldguy that's the Impedance curve that makes it recommended at 2K. But if you look at this model it recommends above 900 HZ.

I won't argue with you- bottom line is it won't work. Nothing you provide a link to would.
The last one you posted is a much better choice, the cabinet may have to be modified, but it would work. It's over 5" in diameter.
I would still look at those 2 Altecs. From there, I would go to speaker suppliers like Madison and see what's available. Then post in any forums I could find for comments.

Dr Tom you have an Altec Mini Monitor 1. An excellent speaker. The Fostex FT48 tweeter is expensive but would be worth it.Madisound is a good place to start looking.
According to the specs you have a 12" frame woofer with a XO at 1600HZ and a radiator dome tweeter.
